Astragalus membranaceus and Angelicae Sinensis are highly synergistic, meaning they are more powerful when taken together. This combination is traditionally called Dang-gui buxue tang.
The starting point for the preparation of Dang-gui buxue tang in traditional Chinese medicine is 30g of Astragalus membranaceus root paired with 6g of Angelicae sinensis. This is a 5:1 ratio, which is ideal for extracting the bioactive ingredients of the plants.
Astragalus membranaceus can also be supplemented via a root extract. Due to potential differences in the quality/efficiency of the extraction process among different commercial manufacturers, product label recommendations for dosage should be followed and you should consult with your pharmacist or personal physician before taking.
The main bioactive compound in Astragalus membranaceus is astragaloside IV, which can be supplemented by itself. The standard dose for astragaloside IV is 5-10mg. *
There’s no universally agreed astragalus extract dosage and what is given are recommendations based on experience. The typical astragalus extract dosage is 9 to 30 g daily. Additionally, some researches have shown that the following doses can be used for particular conditions or ailments:
- • To control blood sugar: 40 to 60g per day for four months taken as a decoction
- • Congestive heart disease: 2 to 7.5g of astragalus powder taken twice a day for one month. This should be taken alongside the normal treatment of the condition.
- • Chronic fatigue: 30g of astragalus root decoction. Taken alongside normal treatment.
- • Kidney disease: about 7.5 to 15g of astragalus powder taken two times a day for 6 months.
- • Seasonal allergies: Take two capsules of 8mg each every day for 6 weeks.
- • Hayfever (allergic rhinitis): 160mg of astragalus extract containing 40% polysaccharides two times daily for 3 to 6 weeks.
- • Agina: 20g of astragalus 3 times a day for 14 days.
- • Diabetes: 250mil of astragalus solution containing 40g of the supplement. This should be administered via IV once per day for 30 days. Follow this by 3 months of the oral tincture.
- • Myocarditis: 2 to 4g of astragalus 2 times daily for 2 weeks. *
The appropriate dose of astragalus depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. For adults, 250 to 500 mg standardized extract three to four times daily.
Powdered Astragalus root; 500 mg to 1000 mg in capsules three times daily.
In tincture form; 30–60 drops of astragalus can be taken four times per day.
Injections should only be given under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
